Solar Power Energy

Although not many people understand the concept, use of solar power, otherwise known as solar energy, is well known in very many parts of the world. Energy from the sun has been used for very many years now, both knowingly and unknowingly. The two major benefits of solar energy are that it does not use fossil fuels in its production and that it will never run out. It is renewable energy.

One of the initial incidences when solar power was used was back in the 1800’s when explorers collected heat from the rays of the sun using a box and used it to cook. Solar energy entails harnessing heat and light from the sun and using it for various uses both in homes and in industries. According to studies, a very tiny portion of the heat from the sun is actually being converted into energy. This is mainly because some people in developed countries have all the power they require that they do not see the point in harnessing energy from the sun while other countries do not have the technology required to do it.

When harnessing energy from the sun, people use heat engines as well as photovoltaic devices. These technologies can be classified into passive and active technologies depending on the way they are used to collect energy and convert it to power. Photovoltaic devices and solar cells are designed to convert the energy into electricity and can be used to power watches and calculators. Photovoltaic panels and other manufactured solar energy collectors are normally classified as the active harnessing technologies while passive technologies involve using building materials that make it easier for energy to be collected from the sun. They are the specific designs incorporated into buildings to ensure that light is dispersed into most parts of a room.

Solar energy can be used in very many ways by people all over the world. Increasingly, the benefits of a solar energy home are being understood. Lighting is the original and most commonly used application of solar energy. The correct use of skylights and windows in buildings reduces the amount of artificial lighting required in such buildings. Using solar water heaters or other types of heaters to warm up rooms or heat water is another common application of solar energy. Swimming pools can also be heated in this way. Building a solar water heater is not expensive and is easily doable by a DIY enthusiast.

Conversion of heat from the sun into electricity involves using solar panels and this is an active solar power collecting technology. However, there is a drawback involved in this technology in that certain parts of the world receive sun rays at certain times of the year based on the season, location and weather condition. This means that people have to collect the all the energy that they require in the period when the sun rays reach the earth.
